Villanueva to Duterte: Reconsider pullout from ICC, face drug inquiry
Senator Joel Villanueva on Wednesday urged President Duterte to reconsider his decision to withdraw the ratification of the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The neophyte senator even called on Duterte to submit himself to the ICC where charges of crimes against humanity are currently filed against him.
“I would advise the President to reconsider and face the process of the ICC. It sends a wrong message to the international community on the political state of the country,” he said.
The President served notice to the ICC through a statement that he’s declaring the Philippines’ withdrawal of its ratification of the Rome Statute effective immediately.
He cited the baseless, unprecedented and outrageous attacks against him and his administration and the alleged attempt of the ICC prosecutor to place him under the tribunal’s jurisdiction.
