12’s the magic number: Duterte to fire gov’t officials with more than a dozen junkets
President Rodrigo Duterte will fire government officials who have flown out of the country more than a dozen times using public funds.
Duterte on Friday (January 12) reiterated his disdain for frequent-flying government officials who he said waste government money attending international conferences and events.
“They go out every convocation, convention, powwow, seminar, labas ng labas. And for those who have traveled more than 12, you have to go,” he said during the 60th birthday party of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez in Tagum City.
Duterte said that while he approves of government officials who go abroad for further studies, flying out of the country for conferences and meetings doesn’t impress him.
“Yung mag-attend ng… p**… Karamihan ng dumaansa akin, almost every conference regarding climate change, kung sino-sino ang kuwan,” he said.
Earlier this month, Malacañang released a memorandum laying down guidelines for overseas travels of officials in the executive branch.
Under the memorandum, requests to leave the country can only be approved by the head of the agency if it meets the following criteria:
– The purpose of the trip is strictly within the mandate of the requesting official or personnel
– The projected expenses of the trip are not excessive
– The trip is expected to bring substantial benefit to the country
