Married priests? Duterte jokes: It won’t be long before we have ‘Ma’am Pope’
President Rodrigo Duterte has poked fun at Pope Francis’ openness to ordaining married men as priests, saying it might not be long before the world sees a “Ma’am Pope.”
In his speech at the anniversary of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) Sunday (March 12), Duterte said Pope Francis had men’s sexual urges in mind when he said ordaining married men as priests should be considered in certain cases.
“Ngayon kita mo si Pope mas bright sa inyo lahat. Sabi niya pwede na, open ako sa pari na…Bakit ‘yan? Kasi alam niya. Lalaki si Pope eh. Ang problema lang kay Pope baka… O pagka nagpakasal kayo bakit kayo lang? Ako pala?” the President said, drawing laughter from the audience.
“Meron na tayong si ‘Ma’am Pope,'” Duterte continued.
The President, who has had a rocky relationship with the Catholic Church, said Pope Francis was only right to consider ordaining married men as priests since men have a biological urge to have sex.
