Ridon wants squatters to return to fire-gutted NGCP property: Inagrabyado na nga sila ng sunog

Apr 21, 2017 @ 9:17

A day after a power transmission tower collapsed due to a fire caused by illegal residents living in its base, Presidential Commission on Urban Poor (PCUP) Chair Terry Ridon is demanding that the squatters be allowed to return to the 400-square meter high-risk property.

In a Palace briefing, Ridon said he would ask for an inter-agency meeting where he would ask the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) and the Muntinlupa local government to allow the 80 families affected by the blaze to continue living under the tower until a relocation site has been arranged for their transfer.

“I think what we would want to see there is kung wala pa pong interim solution sa totoo lang, pabayaan na ho muna silang makabalik ngayon. I mean… to wherever it is that’s acceptable for where they can stay. Kasi hindi naman ho ‘yan actually within the tower eh. Parang within the transmission lines ho ‘yan eh,” said Ridon who was fully aware thet the illegal residents themselves caused the tower’s collapse.

“ I think an interim solution can be done. So for example, we had done it in several of the fires previously ‘no. So particularly those that are involving agencies, pinabayaan na lang ho muna eh, ng mga ahensya na makabalik muna doon sa mga nasunugan pong lugar. So if that is something that can be done for NGCP, I think that is something that we would advise to everyone,” he added.

Ridon clarified that this was just an “interim solution” because he was “quite certain there are no houses yet available for all of them at this point.”

“Kasi hindi naman ho pwede na pabayaan na lang natin sa kalsada ‘yung ating mga kababayan…this is not simply a question of legalese ho ano na kumbaga, ‘o basta pag nasunog na kayo alis na kayo diyan.’ Hindi ho ganon ‘yun eh,” said Ridon.

Aside from allowing them to return to the twoer’s foundation, Ridon said NGCP should “at the very least” give compensation to the fire victims.
“Inagrabyado na nga ho sila ng sunog eh. Para huwag na ho natin itodo pa ho ‘yung problema sa pagpapalayas po sa kanila ng ganon-ganon na lamang po,” said Ridon.
