2-in-1 trip! Duterte to meet Mahathir after watching Pacquiao’s fight in Malaysia
President Rodrigo Duterte will fly to Malaysia this weekend to watch the fight of Senator Manny Pacquiao and meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque disclosed Duterte’s upcoming trip in a tweet posted Monday (July 9) while the Cabinet meeting was ongoing.
“Had Telephone talk with Mahathir before cabinet meeting. He wants to talk about insurgency and ISIS. We will be there July 16,” Roque quoted Duterte as saying.
“After boxing, will talk with Mahathir,” he added, referring to Pacquiao’s fight against Argentinian boxer Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur on July 15.
Malacañang has yet to announce other details of Duterte’s upcoming trip.
Duterte previously said he wanted to talk to the 92-year-old Mahathir about the possibility of sending former terrorists to Malaysia to study and have a new life.
“Tawagan ko lang si Mahathir. Nanalo eh. Talagang bilib ang… Alam mo bakit? What is Malaysia today? Pawis ni Mahathir ‘yan,” he said. in a speech on May 11.
“Kaya kausapin ko siya na may papuntahin ako para mag-aral lang kayo, mga… ‘Yung the whole of Maute group can study there. Unahin ko sila tapos bigyan ko ng lupa,” he added.
