Vice President Leni Robredo has expressed alarm at President Rodrigo Duterte statement that he plans to execute five to six people once the death penalty has been restored, as 8 in 10 Filipinos worry about being a victim of extrajudicial killings (EJKs).
In a statement issued Wednesday (Dec. 21), Robredo said widespread fear of EJKs show the government has failed the people.
“Binigo natin ang sambayanan kung pati ang mga inosenteng tao ay natatakot at pinangangambahan ang kanilang kaligtasan,” she said.
Instead of promoting a culture of violence and death, Robredo said the government should focus on providing people with jobs, education, free hospitalization and medicines, among others.
“Ang tunay na sagot sa pagsupil sa mga krimen ay ang maigting na pagpapatupad ng mga batas at ang pagtutulungan ng mamamayan at pamahalaan,” she said.
Robredo has been more vocal about her opposition to some of the government’s policies since she left the Cabinet as chair of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council.
