Tapos ang usapan! Palace: No need to invite Paolo Duterte, Mans Carpio to Senate after Taguba’s apology
Malacañang believes there is no more reason to invite Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte and lawyer Manases Carpio to the Senate hearing on the P6.4-billion shabu shipment from China.
“With Mark Ruben Taguba II’s statement clearing Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte and Atty. Manases Carpio from involvement in the BOC smuggling case, there may be no reason for the senate investigative panel to call the two individuals to attend any hearing in Metro Manila, although they have indicated willingness to testify,” presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement Saturday (September 2).
Abella, however, added that the executive branch respects the Senate’s independence as a co-equal branch of government.
“We trust its wisdom on this matter,” he said.
Taguba has apologized to Duterte and Carpio, the husband of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, for for dragging their names into the corruption at the Bureau of Customs (BOC).
In a statement, he clarified that he never tagged Duterte and Carpio in the shipment of illegal drugs or the giving of “tara” or bribes to Customs officials.
He said the names of Duterte and Carpio were only mentioned by the so-called “Davao Group” whose direct contacts to him were a certain “Tita Nannie” and “Jack.”
He said any link between the two members of President Rodrigo Duterte’s family are “hearsay in nature.”
Sara, for her part, said her husband and brother are just waiting for an invitation from the Senate to attend the hearing.
