Out of sync ‘Amboys’: Bayan slams Yasay, Lorenzana, Esperon for contradicting Duterte’s anti-US stance
Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) has criticized three Cabinet officials – Foregn Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, and National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon – for not being on the same page as President Rodrigo Duterte with his increasingly anti-United States rhetoric.
In its assessment of Duterte’s first 100 days, Bayan Secretary-General Renato Reyes Jr. said Duterte faced resistance from inside his Cabinet specifically from “from officials who wish to retain neo-colonial relations with the US.
“On several occasions, at least three cabinet officials (Lorenzana, Yasay, Esperon) have openly contradicted the president on matters of foreign policy especially on issues involving US troops and military agreements. Duterte needs to put in writing his foreign policy and leave no room from misinterpretation or deliberate distortion by his officials,” said Reyes.
Duterte announced that he was about to “cross the Rubicon” in the country’s ties with the US and that he was leaning towards building.
Last week, the President announced that he wanted to scuttle the military exercises between the US and the Philippines. But Esperon said the President was probably referring only to this year’s war games. Yasay claimed he didn’t hear Duterte declare that there would be no more war games with the US under his term.
