Aguirre orders NBI to dive back into drug war

Dec 7, 2017 @ 19:36

Taking his cue from President Rodrigo Duterte, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II has brought back the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) into the drug war.

“As such, the National Bureau of Investigation is hereby granted authority to conduct investigation and case build-up for violation of Republic Act No. 9165 otherwise known as ‘Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002’,” read Department Order (DO) No. 779 issued by Aguirre.

Aguirre said the NBI would work with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency which shall continue to be the overall lead agency in drug operations.

DO 779 revoked DO 670 Aguirre issued last October 13 which directed the NBI to have the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) as the sole agency engaged in the drug war.

Last October, Duterte made the PDEA as the sole agency to take on the drug war in the hopes to silence critics, but, withdrew the order after realizing it will take more to fight the drug war.
