Alagang China! Duterte: Xi vows to block my ouster
President Rodrigo Duterte has revealed that his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, promised to block moves to be ousted from office.
In a speech in Casiguran, Aurora Tuesday (May 15), Duterte revealed why he is taking a friendly stance towards China despite its continued militarization in the South China Sea.
“The assurances of Xi Jinping were very encouraging… ‘We will not allow you to be taken out from your office, and we will not allow the Philippines to go to the dogs,'” he said during the send off ceremony for Filipino scientists who will conduct research in the Philippine Rise.
“Siguro kasi freely elected leader naman ako, it could be a very justified statement,” he added.
Duterte and Xi’s most recent meeting was at the Boao economic forum in China last April.
The President has been cool to asserting the favorable ruling of an international arbitral court regarding the maritime dispute, which invalidated China’s sweeping claims over the South China Sea.
Duterte said that while he was initially gung-ho about insisting on the ruling when he assumed office, he softened his stance when Xi told him in a bilateral meeting that his term was a “new day” for Philippine-Chinese relations.
“Naisip-isip ko wala man tayo magawa dito sa China might as well make friends with them,” he said.
