Alejano suspects Bautista resignation part of deal w/ admin that fell through
Magdalo partylist Rep. Gary Alejano said he suspects the resignation of Commission on Elections chairman was part of a deal he reached with the Duterte administration in exchange for the dismissal of the impeachment complaint against him.
But, the lawmaker surmised, the arrangement fell through after the supermajority in the House of Representatives were not happy with the deal, leading to Wednesday’s developments when Bautista was impeached by a 137-75 vote.
“Given how recent events have unfolded, I cannot help but think that the resignation of Chairman Bautista may have been an arrangement pitched with the Duterte administration in exchange of dismissing the impeachment complaint,” he said.
Alejano said, “This was evidenced by how the impeachment complaints against Chairman Bautista and Chief Justice Sereno, both filed by members of the majority in the House, were handled in stark difference.”
“However, the supposed arrangement did not satisfy the members of the House supermajority, hence, they voted to overturn the Justice Committee report and push for the impeachment of Chairman Bautista,” he added.
Alejano said the incident only showed how independent constitutional bodies are seriously under threat.
“The political attacks and pressures against the CHR Commissioner, Ombudsman, Supreme Court Chief Justice, and the COMELEC Chairman give the impression that the Duterte administration is targeting all the independent constitutional bodies. One by one, this administration is killing our institutions,” he said.
