Alvarez: Evidence against Sereno ‘stronger’ but ‘premature to say if she’s guilty’

“So far, so good.”

That was the assessment of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez on the evidence being presented against Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno at the impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives.

“Kasi nga hindi natin minamadali ito at nakita naman natin na yung lumalabas na testimonies from the justices themselves, yung mga employees ng Supreme Court, at yung mga dokumento na dinadala doon sa Committee on Justice ay talagang nagpapatibay doon sa mga allegations,” he said.

But when asked by the interviewer if he thought Sereno was guilty, Alvarez said, “Parang… too premature to say na guilty, kasi mawawalan ng ano yung impeachment court kapag mag-prejudge tayo.”

He elaborated, “Kasi ganito… doon sa complaint, hindi ba, titignan lang natin kung may probable cause, hindi ba? So mayroon. Sufficient in form and substance. So ngayon, i-hear natin para pagtibayin natin… talaga bang ano… totoo ba talaga ito? Nasaan yung mga documents, yung mga testimonies noong mga mayroong first-hand information… that is what we are doing now.”
