Alvarez: No special session of Congress for martial law extension during Christmas break
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said the executive branch should seek an extension of martial law in Mindanao by this week so Congress can discuss it before its last session day on December 13.
If not, he said Congress will not be able to tackle the issue as it will be hard to call the lawmakers back for a special session and interrupt their holiday break.
“Dapat… kailangang mag-communicate sila sa amin within the week, para by next week puwede na naming talakayin iyan, kung aaprubahan or hindi,” Alvarez said in a radio interview.
“At alam mo naman, Pasko ito, hindi ito kagaya ng ibang break na puwedeng ipatawag natin yung mga mambabatas. Ito, Pasko, ang hirap-hirap talaga,” he said.
Alvarez said he actually favors extending martial law in Mindanao until the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term.
“Para sa akin, bilang taga-Mindanao… hindi ba ang original position ko diyan ay kung puwede mag-martial law na kami hanggang end of the term of the President,” he said.
