Alvarez says Sereno, not her lawyers, should face accusers: ‘Why is she afraid?’
Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said the House of Representatives will not allow Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to cross-examine the witnesses against her through counsel.
He said Sereno, as the accused, should be the one to confront the witnesses who will testify against her, not her coterie of lawyers.
Ano yan, eh di lahat ng sasabihin against her ay hindi niya madedepensahan yung sarili niya,” Alvarez said.
Sereno’s spokespersons earlier said she does not intend to personally appear at the House impeachment hearing though she wishes to question her accusers through counsel.
But Alvarez said her lawyers are not the ones facing the charges.
