Andy Bautista impeached
The House of Representatives has impeached Commission on Elections chairman Andy Bautista by reversing the committee report and resolution of the House committee on justice dismissing the impeachment complaint against him.
The chamber voted 137-75, with two abstentions, to overturn the decision of the House committee on justice and ordered the committee to draft and send the articles of impeachment against Bautista to the Senate.
“I believe the charges against Comelec chairman Bautista are very serious. Therefore, I vote no,” Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said during the voting.
A vote of only one-third, or 98, of the 292 House members is needed to impeach an official.
The Senate will now try Bautista as an impeachment court. Bautista has resigned effective at the end of the year, but lawmakers say he should have resigned effective immediately.
The committee earlier junked the complaint against Bautista for insufficiency in form.
