Ateneans protest passage of death penalty bill with walkout
College students from the Ateneo de Manila University will stage a walkout at 11 a.m. Thursday (March 2) to protest the passage of the bill reinstating the death penalty on second reading in the House of Representatives.
After going out of their classrooms, Ateneans will converge at Gate 2.5 to hold a noise barrage.
The Jesuit-run university has expressed its opposition to bringing back capital punishment.
In a statement issued last February, ADMU president Fr. Jose Ramon “Jett” Villarin said imposing the death penalty not only goes against the Catholic Church’s teachings, but also the Bill of Rights enshrined in the Constitution.
House Bill No. 1 reinstating the death penalty was approved on second reading via viva voce Wednesday night (March 1).
