Ateneo’s Jett Villarin stands up vs. death penalty: Everyone deserves a second chance

Oct 10, 2017 @ 15:54

Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) President Fr. Jett Villarin, SJ has expressed his opposition to the reinstatement of capital punishment, saying everyone deserves a second chance.

On the occasion of World Day Against Death Penalty, Villarin issued a statement on his Facebook page saying that all people can change.

“State-sanctioned killing ends all possibilities for change for criminals, and a flawed criminal justice system unfairly disadvantages the poor. Killing people doesn’t solve the problem – it makes it worse,” he said.

Instead of subscribing to the motto of “an eye for an eye,” Villarin said he is an “I for an I.”

“No more vengeance. No more bloodshed. No more killing,” he said.

President Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to bring back the death penalty for heinous crimes. A bill is pending in the House of Representatives.
