President Rodrigo Duterte wants to hear Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) founding chairman Nur Misuari’s thoughts about the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) before he signs it into law.

In a speech at the Eid’l Fitr celebration in Davao City Saturday (June 17), Duterte expressed hope that the BBL bill will be passed during his term.

“We will try to pass the BBL. I hope Chairman Misuari can be convinced to join the talks so that if there are corrections or maybe additions, or provisions that would not sit well with Tausug and the rest of the southern part of Mindanao, then maybe we can realize altogether the friction of the MI, MN and the rest of Mindanao,” he said.

Duterte pleaded with Moros to find a common ground in passing the BBL to avoid war.

“Kung sabihin mo na — if we do not think about it, if we kind of adapt in an intransigence behavior, magpatigasan, it will result in a war. Kindly, if you want, do not do it on my term,” he said.

“‘Pag hindi naman tayo nagka-aregluhan, eh ako nasa gitna, mahirapan ako. Sinong barilin ko? Sundalo ng Republika o sundalo ng MI pati MN, and the rest of the revolutionary groups here?” Duterte added.

The proposed BBL seeks to formalize the creation of a new political entity that will replace the existing Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Duterte is expected to sign it into law next month after the Senate and House of Representatives come up with a common version of the measure during the bicameral conference committee.
