Bam wants gov’t agency solely for senior citizens
Senator Bam Aquino on Wednesday pressed for the creation of separate agency that would promote and protect the rights of senior citizens.
He earlier filed Senate Bill No. 674 which aims to create a National Commission for Senior Citizens (NCSC) to ensure that rights and privileges that the elderly are entitled to are properly given to them.
SBN 674 seeks to amend Section 11 of Republic Act 7432 or the Expanded Senior Citizen Act of 2010, abolishing the National Coordinating and Monitoring Board and replacing it with NCSC.
The proposed NCSC will be headed by a chairperson and commissioners to be chosen from a list submitted by senior citizens organizations and associations.
“Napakahalaga ng papel ng senior citizens sa ating lipunan at sa inyong mga pamilya kaya marapat lang na bigyang tulong ang ating senior citizen,” Aquino said.
The senator stressed this point when he met with leaders of different senior citizens’ organizations from Luzon.
“Mahalagang masiguro na ang lahat ng benepisyong nakalaan sa ating senior citizens ay naibibigay. Tutukan natin ang kanilang kapakanan,” he said.
During his talk with senior citizens, Aquino said that the Go Negosyo Act, which he sponsored and authored in the 16th Congress, will give them a chance to venture into business, which will enable them to provide additional help to their family.
“Sa pamamagitan ng pagnenegosyo, mayroon pa rin tayong paraan para makatulong sa ating mga pamilya,” said Aquino, whose father and mother are now both senior citizens.
He also assured senior citizens of his full support behind the Universal Social Pension Bill filed by Senator Grace Poe which aims to provide a universal social pension for all senior citizens.
