Bawal bumaril! Ping, Gringo, Chiz welcome US help in Maute fight– as long as it’s just intel
Senators Panfilo Lacson, Gringo Honasan and Francis “Chiz” Escudero see nothing wrong with the assistance being given by the United States to the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Marawi City as long as they don’t fight alongside troops.
Lacson, a former head of the Philippine National Police, said Sunday (June 11) that the US’ help “should be a welcome move” as long as its involvement involves technical assistance and providing intelligence information.
Honasan, who used to be a soldier, said the assistance being given by the US to the AFP is reportedly limited to technical information and equipment.
Escudero, for his part said the US can only help the Philippine military “in a technical or advisory capacity under existing laws and treaties.”
“They cannot engage in actual missions and operations,” he said.
The US Embassy in Manila earlier confirmed that American troops have been helping the AFP upon the request of the Philippine government.
Filipino soldiers have been fighting the Maute group and other Islamist radicals in Marawi City since May 23.
