Better late than never: BuCor frees 234 inmates who finished sentences
Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Benjamin Delos Santos freed on Friday (March 17) 234 inmates in Leyte who should have long been released.
Benjamin said that the convicted inmates were released from the Leyte Prison and Penal Farm upon the approval of President Rodrigo Duterte and Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II.
The BuCor chief noted that those released have already served their sentences with good conduct time allowance (GCTA).
He lamented that they continued to languish in prison due to the slow processing of their papers.
De Los Santos said that their release was a result of the task force he created to speed up the processing of documents from inmates set for release.
“The priority program seeks to ease the backlogs and expedite decongestion in prison facilities,” he stated.
