Matibay ang kapitan! Lucio Tan gifts Duterte BFF Samuel Uy with not 1 but 2 board seats
Bilyonaryo Lucio Tan has rewarded Davao businessman Samuel Uy with board seats in not one but two in his business empire.
Based on the website of Tan’s Macroasia Corp., the 64-year old BFF of President Rodrigo Duterte was appointed independent director of the aviation support services firm on April 30, 2018.
The same website reported that Uy was also appointed director of Tan’s Philippine Airlines Holdings in March 2017 or a month before Duterte kicked off his long-running tirade against Tan’s alleged unpaid taxes.
“”Lucio Tan has almost billion, 30 billion. He has to pay. He has to pay. Lahat, they have to pay,” Duterte said in a Qatar speech in April 2017.
A year after Uy took over as PAL director, Duterte has been singing a different tune.
In a speech in February 2018, Duterte said: “Mr. Lucio Tan, I’m going to shut up forever. Wala ka na marinig sa akin na salita na di ka nagbayad. Okay na sa akin tapos na. Nabayaran mo naman yung mga taxes mo – at yung pinakita mo. And mind you, I am ready to protect every businessman kagaya ninyo.”
This after Tan was forced to shell out P6 billion to pay off PAL’s long-standing debts to the government (after Duterte threatened to shut him down) and Tan brought home 150 distressted overseas Filipino workers in February.
(During the same period, the government eliminated Tan’s biggest rival in the cigarette business, Wung Chu King, which was forced to make a P40 billion tax settlement and sell their business to Japan Tobacco International, a former partner of Tan for Winston, Camel and Salem brands in the Philippines).
So who is Uy?
The 64-year old is a boyhood friend of Duterte who chipped in P30 million to his 2016 campaign.
According to Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, Uy allegedly deposited close to P120 million from October 11, 2011, to April 10, 2013 to the bank accounts of Duterte’s partner, Honeylet, and his three children with his first wife – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, resigned Vice Mayor Paolo, and Sebastian.
Macroasia described Uy as a B.S. Agriculture graduate of Xavier University.
He is also the President and Administrator of Ricardo Limso Medical Center (since 2004); President and CEO of 3S Realty Corp. (since 2007 to present) and Toril Sports Complex (2008 to present); Vice President of Kaunlaran Development Corp.; Davao Farms Incorporated (since 1986 to present); Dimdi Centre Inc. (since 1986 to present); Daland Development Corp.; Secretary of Millenium Cars Mindanao and Treasurer for Dimdi Builders Inc.; and director of Honda Cars Gensan.
