Calida on Duterte being chummy with Napoles lawyers: What’s wrong with that?
Solicitor General Jose Calida can’t understand why some sectors are raising a fuss over President Rodrigo Duterte’s close ties with lawyers of Janet Lim Napoles.
“They are good friends. Whats wrong with that?” said Calida when asked by CNN Philippine’s Pinky Webb.
Last January 11, Calida had asked the Court of Appeals to overturn the conviction of Napoles for illegal detention of pork barrel scam whistleblower Benhur Luy. Napoles is currently serving her life sentence at the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong City.
The move to free Napoles has sparked speculation that the Duterte was doing favors to three of his most active supporters from San Beda Law School – lawyers Bruce Rivera, Stephen David and his wife, incumbent Bureau of Internal Revenue Deputy Commissioner Lanee Cui-David.
Rivera and the David couple are the lawyers of Napoles in her pork barrel scam and illegal detention cases.
Calida merely scoffed at such insinuations and insisted that there was no deal between Duterte and Napoles and her lawyers. “We just don’t want any one suffering for a crime he or she didn’t commit,” said Calida.
