Why can’t Yasay stay? Duterte reveals why Alan Cayetano will become DFA chief in 2017
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano will be taking over Foreign Affairs Perfecto Yasay Jr.’s post in mid-2017, President Rodrigo Duterte has confirmed.
In an exclusive interview with CNN Philippines Thursday (Dec. 29), Duterte said Yasay would have to leave the Cabinet next year because he has to return to the United States “to fulfill his obligations.”
“He is on contract as a professor,” the President said of Yasay.
“Nakiusap naman ako because he was my roommate during law school,” he added.
Yasay was a visiting law professor at the Richardson School of Law in the University of Hawaii before returning to the Philippines to become part of Duterte’s Cabinet.
“Alan Cayetano will be coming in to take (the) post,” the President said.
Speculation has been rife about Cayetano’s appointment to head the Department of Foreign Affairs since he lost in the May 2016 polls. However, because of the year-long ban on appointing candidates, he has to wait until next year to join the Cabinet.
