Carpio tells Duterte: Watch your mouth on PH territorial claims
Supreme Court (SC) Justice Antonio Carpio said President Rodrigo Duterte should be more careful regarding what he says about the country’s territorial claims.
“Avoid any act, statement or declaration that expressly or impliedly waives Philippine sovereignty to any Philippine territory in the West Philippine Sea,” Carpio said.
“This will preserve for future generations of Filipinos their national patrimony in the West Philippine Sea,” he noted.
Carpio reacted to statements made by Duterte, who expressed his hesitation on going to war against China following the regional heavyweights continued plans to build structures on the disputed Scarborough Shoal.
Carpio said Duterte should file a strong formal protest against the Chinese’s building activity.
“This is the least that the President should do. This is what the Vietnamese did recently when China sent cruise tours to the disputed Paracels,” said Carpio.
