Carpio urges Duterte to defend national territory
Supreme Court (SC) Justice Antonio Carpio has appealed to President Rodrigo Duterte to ensure the territorial integrity of the country.
Carpio reacted to the statements of Duterte who said he does not want to wage war with China over its latest moves to put up structures in the disputed Panatag shoal, also known as the Scarborough Shoal.
Citing Republic Act 9522, also known as the Act to Define the Baselines of the Territorial Sea of the Philippines, Capio pointed out that “Scarborough Shoal is part of Philippine national territory.”
“The President is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces which are expressly tasked by the Constitution to defend the national territory,” he stressed.
Because of the latest Chinese incursion, Duterte said that if the Philippines will go to war with China “we will all lose our military and policemen.”
“We are a destroyed nation. We cannot even assert a single sentence of the provision that we signed,” the President lamented.
