Check before you speak! Robredo puzzled why Aguirre would fall for fake news
Vice President Leni Robredo has expressed concern over Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II’s belief in fake news after he erroneously accused opposition politikos of involvement in the Marawi siege.
Facing reporters in Batangas Tuesday (June 13), Robredo said Aguirre’s latest gaffe was worrisome since it reflected badly on the agency he heads.
“Kapag iyong mga sinasabi nya hindi totoo di, nawawala iyong tiwala ng tao sa institusyon mismo. Hindi lang naman ito sa kanya, pero sa institusyon,” she said after a dialogue with bamboo stick makers.
Aguirre accused Senators Antonio Trillanes IV and Bam Aquino, Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano, and former Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Ronald Llamas of meeting in Marawi City before the Mautes staged their attack on May 23.
He also showed a photo to prove that the meeting took place.
The Justice Secretary retracted his statement after the photo he showed was found to have been taken in 2015.
Given the abundance of sources of fake news, Robredo said it becomes even more important for the public to be united and help each other.
