Clash of titans: Tondo Boy Villar to challenge Erap in Manila in 2019
Former Senate President Manny Villar is set to make his political comeback in 2019 by running for mayor of Manila.
Eyed as Villar’s running mate is former Manila vice mayor Isko Moreno, whom Estrada promised to endorse for mayor in the 2016 polls– before deciding to run for a second term.
While Villar hasn’t held a local post in Manila, the city is a familiar territory to him since he grew up in the vote-rich Tondo.
The bilyonaryo politiko even used his rags-to-riches story to court votes when he ran for president in 2010.
The 2019 mayoralty race is the second time Estrada and Villar will face against each other. They both ran in the 2010 presidential elections but lost to then-Senator Benigno Aquino III.
Given his clout and money, Villar is sure to give incumbent Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada a run for his post.
Villar may be seen by voters as a fresh face who will lead the city into the future in contrast to Estrada, who is turning 80 years old this year.
