Close but not quite: Duterte takes a peek at De Lima’s cell
President Rodrigo Duterte came close to meeting Senator Leila de Lima when he visited Camp Crame on Wednesday (August 10) for the the police’s 116th anniversary.
In a speech before businessmen later in the day, Duterte said he was able to take a peek at where De Lima was detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center.
“Yung kay Delilah sa’kin, skeletal lang naman ‘yun. Nagpunta ako doon sa Crame, sinilip ko ‘yung presuhan niya,” he said, referring to one of the names he has for the senator.
“Pssssttt. Gusto kong sabihin o… Malayo man. Nagpunta ako sabi ko, saan na ‘yung g*** na ‘yun? Doon dinala ako,” he added.
Turning serious, Duterte said he cannot believe how De Lima managed to convince foreign politikos and human rights groups of her innocence.
De Lima has been detained at Camp Crame since February over drug-related charges.
“Hindi niyo tinignan kung anong klaseng babae ‘yan? And they come here and say na she’s a prisoner of conscience. My God,” he said, referring to the foreign politikos and personalities who have visited De Lima in detention to check on her condition.
