Comelec en banc takes up PDP-Laban faction issue

Amid the buzz from the filing of the certificates of candidacy for the May 2019 polls, the Commission on Elections en banc took up the issue of the warring factions of ruling party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
A source with the Comelec told Politiko that the en banc discussed Thursday (October 11) the debacle faced by PDP-Laban, whose legitimacy is being challenged by a faction led by Rogelio Garcia.
This was confirmed to Politiko by Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez.
Jimenez said PDP-Laban’s factions was only one of the matters discussed during the en banc’s meeting and is still not up for resolution.
Comelec’s ruling on the issue would finally settle which PDP-Laban group would be recognized as legitimate, as both factions are claiming to be the real ruling party.
Garcia’s faction has went as far as issuing their own certificate of nomination (CONA) for Freddie Aguilar, who is running under PDP-Laban for senator.
However, Pimentel denied that Aguilar is an official PDP-Laban bet, as he was not issued a CONA signed by the party’s secretary general, Davao del Norte 1st District Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez.
President Rodrigo Duterte, who is recognized as the chair of both PDP-Labans, tried to mend the rift between them, but failed to do so.
