Consistent vs EJKs: Hontiveros vows to continue to champion human rights
Senator Risa Hontiveros on Thursday maintained that she would always denounce human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings (EJKs).
She made the remark after Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio depicted her as “ungrateful” for criticizing the war on drugs of his father, President Rodrigo Duterte.
The lady mayor revealed that the senator had sought her help to secure votes from Davaoenos during the May 2016 national elections.
“From the very beginning, Mayor Sara knows where I stand on the issues of human rights and the extrajudicial killings that have been happening in the country,” Hontiveros said.
“I have been consistent in this regard. My stand on the war on drugs and my current criticisms of the administration should come as no surprise,” she said.
She added, “Dissent is healthy in a democracy. It serves a check and balance to abuse of power and a way to better governance. It should never be viewed as a hindrance.”
