Cyber attack in Senate: LP senators denounce hacking of emails
The Senate minority group believes that the series of hacking incidents involving the email addresses of their staff members is part of a pattern to pin the political opposition for “imaginary” destabilization attempts.
The opposition senators has sought the help of Senate President Koko Pimentel to look into the alleged hacking of the email addresses of their staff members.
“Let us be clear. There is no destabilization plot. Dissent is not destabilization. Dissent is indispensable in a democracy,” they said in joint statement.
“These are cause for concern as Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre spearheaded the creation of the Citizen National Guard, which says that dissent is destabilization,” the minority group said.
Senators Frank Drilon, Kiko Pangilinan, Antonio Trillanes, Bam Aquino, Risa Hontiveros, and detained Leila de Lima also asked the help of the Senate sergeant-at-arms to secure the services of experts to prevent the hacking incidents.
“We in the political opposition are seriously concerned about several hacking incidents concerning the email addresses of our staff from the offices of Senators Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino, and just now the official email addresses for releasing media statements of Sen. Pangilinan and the Liberal Party,” they said.
“The nature of the breach in all instances is the same: Unauthorized users sent emails using the staff and party addresses,” they added.
The opposition senators said that they have already reported previous incidents to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and awaiting “updates on the matter.”
