Dahil nasa party ng LGBT? Duterte changes tune on same-sex marriage: We can change the law
From being against same-sex marriage, President Rodrigo Duterte now said he supports changing the law to allow gays and lesbians to marry.
Duterte voiced his preference for same-sex marriage at the 7th year-end gathering of the LGBT community in Davao City Sunday (December 17).
“Ako gusto ko same sex marriage. Ang problema we’ll have to change the law. But we can change the law,” he said, drawing applause from the crowd.
“Eh ang batas kasi marriage is a union between a man and a woman. I don’t have any problems making it marrying a man, marrying a woman or whatever is the predilection of the human being,” he added.
Earlier this year, however, Duterte said he was against the idea of a man marrying a man, and a woman marrying someone of the same sex.
In a speech in Myanmar in March, he said approval for same-sex marriage is limited to Western countries with liberal cultures.
“Yun ang kultura nila. Eh di kayo lang, hindi ‘yan pwede sa amin kay Katoliko kami at there is the Civil Code, which says that you can only marry a woman for me… for a woman to marry a man,” he said.
“Kung saan ka pinuwesto ng Diyos, diyan ka lang. Huwag na mong haluin kaming lahat. Biro mo, ako ang Presidente tapos wala ng — you erase the great divide between a woman and a man,” Duterte added.
Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, Duterte’s top ally in the House of Representatives, has filed House Bill 6595 which seeks to recognize licensed unions of LGBT couples.
