Dark horse for Speaker? Lord Allan Jay Velasco emerges as power broker in House
Former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo isn’t the only politiko who has a band of loyal allies in the House of Representatives.
Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco is emerging as a power broker in the House, with young lawmakers being drawn to his charisma and likeable personality.
Velasco’s growing base of supporters has given rise to speculation that he might challenge Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez when the third regular session of the 17th Congress starts in July.
Arroyo reportedly remains the frontrunner to replace Alvarez as Speaker, though Velasco could very well come in a close second.
Working in favor of Supreme Court Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco’s son is his closse friendship with President Rodrigo Duterte.
In 2016, Duterte celebrated Christmas in his Davao City home with Velasco and his wife.
A PDP-Laban stalwart, the young lawmaker celebrated his 40th birthday at Malacañang Park with Duterte as special guest.
While Velasco isn’t as visible or noisy as other politikos, he appears to be deftly plotting his political moves.
He reportedly bankrolled the “Ready, Set, Go!” event in Intramuros Wednesday (March 14) where politikos and other personalities urged Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go to run for senator.
Even as stars appear to be aligning for Velasco, it will ultimately be Duterte who will decide whether Alvarez should be replaced– and by whom.
