Di mapipigilan! Palace: DILG firetrucks purchase still a go even if Duterte found them expensive
The Department of Interior and Local Government’s purchase of firetrucks from Austria– which reportedly cost former Secretary Ismael Sueno his job– will push through, Malacañang said Thursday (April 20).
In a statement, presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said the DILG needs to proceed with buying the firetrucks because “it is a perfected contract and there is no temporary restraining order (TRO) that prevents its implementation.”
Duterte has been vocal about his qualms about the DILG’s purchase of firetrucks, which even made Sueno fly to Austria.
In a speech at the Cine Lokal launch on Wednesday (April 19), Duterte said he asked Sueno why DILG is pushing through with the procurement despite his legal team’s opinion that it was questionable.
The President said he also found the firetrucks expensive.
“Sabi ko bakit pumunta doon to sign, to buy it fire truck worth 18 million? P****** i**, anong klaseng sunog ‘yan? We’ll buy it at 7, 8. That’s the running price now over a fire truck made in Japan,” he said.
Duterte said he fired Sueno after the latter denied receiving the DILG legal team’s opinion about the firetrucks purchase.
“Sabi ko lang, ‘You’re fired. Go out of this office. I don’t need you,'” he said.
