Dick tells Pinoys to keep calm over state of emergency. Here’s why
Senator Richard “Dick” Gordon on Thursday (September 8) gave his personal assurance that he would look after the rights of citizens even as a “state of emergency” persists over the entire country.
“No need for people to fear state of national emergency,” Gordon said in an interview on ANC Headstart.
He allayed people’s concerns by pointing out that Congress exists to “provide check and balance to state of national emergency”.
In particular, Gordon guaranteed that the Senate Blue Committee will “safeguard rights against violations in relation to [the] proclamation of state of national emergency”.
Gordon himself chairs the powerful Blue Ribbon panel, which is officially named the Accountability of Public Officers and Investigations Committee.
On September 4 or two days after the bloody Davao night market bombing, President Rodrigo Duterte placed the country under a state of emergency. Earlier, he declared a “state of lawlessness” and invited the military to take part in law enforcement activities.
“As long as they don’t violate rights of people, they are okay,” Gordon said.
