Diokno wants gov’t to speed up measures to address inflation

Department of Budget and Management Secretary Benjamin Diokno on Wednesday urged the government to speed up the rollout of the social mitigation measures to address the continuous rise of inflation.
“The government efforts to tame inflation remain appropriate but must be delivered with greater sense of urgency,” said Diokno.
His statement came after the Philippine Statistics Authority announced that inflation in the Philippines jumped to 6.4 percent in August, up from 5.7 percent in July.
The secretary said the “big chunk” of the August inflation is caused by high prices of food, particularly fish, rice, other meat, and vegetables.
“The unconditional cash transfers and the Pantawid passes programs should be delivered much faster,” he added. “Congress ought to act on the rice ratification bill expeditiously.”
