Unapologetic Duterte tells Catholics: ‘Your God is stupid, mine has a lot more common sense’
President Rodrigo Duterte has denied calling God stupid drawing flak from various sectors, saying he was referring to other divine beings.
In a speech in Cagayan de Oro City Monday (June 25), Duterte said a review of his June 22 speech would show that he didn’t call God stupid.
“Sabi ko, ‘Your God is not my God because your God is stupid. Mine has a lot of common sense.’ Why do we have to talk about religion? If I choose not to believe in any God, what’s the f—ing thing about it? It’s the freedom to choose,” he said.
Duterte insisted that he believes in God that is “perfect” and has “perfect common sense.”
“Ako, I believe in a universal Being. There is somebody up there more supreme that the rest of the gods of men. Meron talaga diyan kasi pag hindi, with all the billions and trillions of stars, pag walang nag control niyan sumabog na tayo lahat,” he said.
Speaking at the National Information and Communications Technology Summit in Davao City last week, Duterte questioned why God would create a perfect world, only to let it fall into sin.
“Who is this stupid God? Estupido talaga itong p***** i** kung ganun. You created some — something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work. How — how can you rationalize a God?” he asked.
His remark triggered a flurry of negative reactions from politikos and religious personalities, with Senator Panfilo Lacson expressing hope that God will forgive Duterte for his sins.
Senator Joel Villanueva and Buhay party-list Rep. Lito Atienza, meanwhile, said they will both pray for the President’s enlightenment.
