Doesn’t Duterte need SC anymore? Justices not invited to Vin d’ honneur

Jan 11, 2017 @ 20:50

Does President Rodrigo Duterte no longer see the need for the judiciary?

Duterte’s view of the judiciary has come into question after Supreme Court Justices were not seen at Wednesday’s (Jan. 11) Vin d’ honneur in Malacañang.

The magistrates were absent because they didn’t get any invitation from Malacañang, Politiko has learned.

In a bid to explain Vice President Leni Robredo’s disinvitation to the event, presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said: “It is the prerogative of the Palace to invite those who they feel is needed to be there.”

Going by that line, is the Palace implying that the SC Justices are already dispensable to Duterte?

In December last year, Duterte said he wants to amend the 1987 Constitution to make the declaration of martial law the President’s sole prerogative.

He said it would be inefficient to get the concurrence of Congress and the Supreme Court regarding the declaration of martial law when chaos is already taking place.
