Duterte agrees with GMA’s anti-inflation strategy of lowering tariffs in meat, fish imports
President Rodrigo Duterte has agreed to implement a suggestion by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to fight inflation by pulling down tariffs on fish and meat imports.
This was announced by Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque less than a week after Arroyo met with Duterte’s economic managers with a package of proposals to fight inflation which surged to 5.2 percent.
“Sa mula’t mula, abot-kayang pagkain ang hangad ng Pangulong Rodrigo Roa Duterte. To cushion the impact of rising prices, pushing for lower tariffs on meat and fish imports is one of the proposed measures discussed during the recent meeting between President Duterte’s economic managers and Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The economic managers are happy to be continuing to be working closely with the leadership of the legislature,” said Roque in a statement..
In a meeting with the country’s economic managers on Tuesday, Arroyo proposed to cut tariff rates of fish to zero and reduce the duties on meat imports.
The move would pull down the impact of food prices on inflation.
