Duterte apologizes for declaring martial law; promises Marawi will be beautiful again
President Rodrigo Duterte has apoligized for taking harsh actions, including declaring martial law in Mindanao, to quash a group of terrorists who took over Marawi City last May 23.
“I would like to say to the Maranao people that I am very, very, very sorry na nangyari ito sa atin. Sana kung madaling panahon, you will find a new heart to forgive my soldiers, ang gobyerno, pati ako for declaring martial law. Wala akong choice eh sinisira na ang Marawi,” said Duterte in a speech before thousands of displaced families who fled to Iligan from Marawi.
“I have to drive them out. But I am very sorry. Paki-abot na lang doon sa mga kapatid nating mga Maranao na ang aking paghihinanakit rin sa nangyari na ito. Patawarin ninyo po kami,” he added.
But Duterte promised that he would start to rehabilitate Marawi immediately after resolving the crisis. “Gaganda ‘yan ulit, gaganda ulit ‘yan,” said Duterte.
“But this I will promise you, I will set aside initially 20 billion para maumpisahan, ‘yung mga mahirap ang unahin ko. Most important thing is that matulungan ko kayo. Huwag kayong mag-alala, tutulungan ko kayo, hindi ko kayo pababayaan, hanggang relocation,” he said.
