Duterte calls special Cabinet meeting to discuss arbitration ruling
President Rodrigo Duterte called for a full Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, July 12, shortly after the Philippines won its territorial case against China before a UN tribunal.
Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar confirmed that the UN arbitration ruling would be discussed in the Cabinet meeting, CNN Philippines reported.
CNN also quoted Secretary Andanar as saying the Solicitor General would provide President Duterte a synopsis of the ruling tomorrow (July 13) and a complete and thorough interpretation in five days.
The Philippines has welcomed the issuance of an Award by the UN’s Permanent Court of Arbitration on the arbitration case against China over territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea.
In a statement, Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay said the Philippine experts are now studying the Award, as he called on concerned parties to exercise restraint and sobriety.
Secretary Yasay said the decision upholds international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS.
