Duterte certifies rice tariffication bill as urgent

President Rodrigo Duterte has certified as urgent the Rice Tariffication Bill.
This was confirmed on Sunday by presidential aide Christopher “Bong” Go.
Go said that Senate Bill No. 1998 aims to replace the quantitative import restrictions on rice with tariffs.
The rice tariffication bill would enhance rice competitiveness and increase supply of the food staple and make its price more affordable, he added.
“Ginawa natin ito kasi kailangan masiguro na sapat at maayos ang suplay ng bigas at ibang pagkain,” the Special Assistant to the President said.
“The measure will help achieve stability of rice supply because rice is imported easily to the country, therefore, helping bring down the prices; prevent artificial rice shortages; and curtail corruption and cartel domination in the rice industry,” Go said.
