Duterte defends campaigning abroad: Anong paki niyo?

President Rodrigo Duterte doesn’t see anything wrong with campaigning for the administration’s senatorial candidates abroad ahead of the 2019 election season.

Speaking before the Filipino community in Papua New Guinea Friday (November 16), Duterte said he can campaign for his preferred candidates overseas because laws banning it are only applicable when one is in the Philippines.

“Bawal daw sa kampanya. U***, wala man ako sa Pilipinas. You know criminal laws are jurisdictional. You can only be prosecuted in the country where you committed the crime. Eh magkampanya ako dito paki ninyo,” he said.

The Supreme Court, in a 2009 decision, practically nixed the offense of premature campaigning when it ruled that someone only officially becomes a candidate when the campaign season starts.

Thus, any form of self-promotion before the start of the campaign season could not be considered premature campaigning.

In his speech, Duterte endorsed former Philippine National Police chief Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa as someone who deserves to become a senator.

“Mahusay talaga ‘to. Kailangan ninyo ng mga pulis na matino,” he said.

Duterte, however, mistakenly referred to Dela Rosa as his long time chief of staff even if they had worked together when the latter was assigned to Davao as its police chief.
