Duterte defends rape remark: What’s wrong? I didn’t make a joke
President Rodrigo Duterte has defended his remark that rapists can mess with Miss Universe instead of kids, saying what he meant was both offenses will result in death.
In a speech at the oath-taking of new government officials in Malacañang Monday (July 17), Duterte said the context of his speech was the gruesome killing of a family of five in Bulacan, in which two women were also reportedly raped.
“At tsaka ‘yung sabi ‘rape’, hindi ako nagjo-joke noon, it’s Malacañang. Sinong bang nagsabi na ‘rape joke?’ I was not joking,” he said.
Duterte said he was appalled that even the one-year-old child in the family was raped and killed by a construction worker.
“Kaya ang sinabi ko, ‘You know, even if you rape a one-year-old or a Miss Universe, just the same, you will lose your balls and I will kill you.’ What’s wrong? Why do you say I’m threatening people?” he asked.
Speaking before Filipino-American executives in Davao City last July 14, Duterte said: “Ang ayaw ko ‘yung bata. Kung pakialaman mo siguro ‘yung Ms. Universe, maybe I would even congratulate you for having the balls to rape somebody when you know that you are going to die. Pero ‘yung bata, ‘yung mag rape ka tapos you… mahirap ‘yan.”
However, of five members of the Carlos family who died, the one-year old was Dexter Jr.
The victims who were reportedly raped were Estrella Carlos and her 58-year-old mother, Auring Dizon.
