Duterte defends wearing of shoes inside Marawi Grand Mosque: Gustong nyong magpasugat ako sa paa?
President Rodrigo Duterte has defended wearing his shoes inside the Marawi Grand Mosque during his most recent visit to the war-torn city.
In an interview Tuesday (September 12), Duterte noted that the mosque’s interiors were full of glass and debris from the ongoing fighting between the soldiers and the Maute group.
“And ano, para ka matinik? Tapos ‘pag ba na — ‘Ano ‘yan? Papa-tetanus ka nanaman?’bMakikita mo ‘yan sa floor — may IED nga doon eh — ‘yung pressure — maraming basag na… Gusto mo mag-tinikling ka doon?” he told reporters after visiting a soldier’s wake at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
As someone with Moro roots, Duterte said he was well aware of the culture in Marawi. He said he did not mean any disrespect when he did not take his shoes off durihg visit to the mosque.
“Magpasugat kami ng paa? I respect Islam, that was the religion of my — there was no — it was not meant to disrespect or dishonor. Ayaw ko lang matinik pati ‘yung lahat,” he said.
The President visited Marawi City on September 11 to show his support for the troops battling the terrorists.
