Duterte denies ulterior motive in Boracay closure: Wala akong negosyanteng pagbibigyan!
President Rodrigo Duterte has denied that he’s favoring businessmen with the closure of Boracay for six months.
In a speech before surrenderees of the ISIS-affiliated Maute group Friday (May 11), Duterte said he will not have friends who will benefit from the island’s shutdown.
“Eh kasi tinatakot ako na may mga kaibigan ko raw, wala akong kaibigang negosyante na mayaman na sabihin mo, ibigay ko ‘yang Boracay,” he said in Marawi City.
Duterte maintained that he only wants Boracay to be cleaned up.
“‘Pag nalinis na po ‘yang Boracay at nalinis itong Marawi, ibalik namin ‘yan sa inyo. Walang problema,” he said.
Duterte ordered Boracay’s temporary closure after calling its sea a “cesspool” because of the waste that goes into the water.
Until October, tourists and outsiders are restricted from entering the island while authorities seek to resolve the environmental violations committed by businesses.
