Duterte digs up Dunkin’ Donuts’ P1.5B tax dues to attack Prietos: Wala o konti lang binayaran
President Rodrigo Duterte resurrected an old tax issue that has hounded the Prieto family since the past administration.
In a press conference in Palawan Thursday, Duterte noted how the owners of the Philippine Daily Inquirer managed to escape payment for P1.5 billion in back taxes for their franchise operation, Dunkin’ Donuts.
“Inquirer ang may-ari ng Dunkin’ Donuts. Alam mo ba ‘yan? At may utang ‘yan sila na taxes inayos ni Kim Henares. Walang ibinayad o nabayad nang konti lang,” said Duterte.
“Ang Inquirer may utang ‘yan na running to billion. Iyan ang totoo na mga oligarchs na mga mayaman. Sila ‘yun, they control the airwaves. Sila ‘yung nagfi-feed ng balita na basura. Sila ‘yan,” he added.
The Bureau of Internal Revenue was charged three years ago with “intentional failure” to collect P1.56 billion in back taxes from Golden Donuts Inc. (GDI), the Prieto firm which holds the Dunkin’ Donuts franchise in the Philippines.
A former BIR official exposed discrepancies in Dunkin’ Donuts financial records in 2007 and 2008 where it undeclared its sales to cheat the government of taxes.
