Duterte envies San Beda graduates: ‘Di ako pinayagan ng mga paring mag-martsa
If there’s one thing President Rodrigo Duterte failed to do as a student of San Beda College of Law, it would be to march in a toga to get his diploma.
In a speech during the commencement rites of San Beda University Tuesday (May 29), Duterte shared his envy at the graduates for attending the event.
“Actually naiinggit ako sa inyo kasi hindi ako pinayagan ng mga brothers pati pari mag-graduate,” he said.
Duterte said he was barred by school officials from taking part in the graduation exercises because he shot a fraternity brother from Lex Talionis on campus in 1972.
He admitted to lying to his mother, Soledad, about the graduation to hide details about his offense.
Duterte said he was able to convince his mother that his graduation rites will not push through because of the commotion happening in Metro Manila in connection with then- President Ferdinand Marcos’ rule.
“So sabi niya, ‘Mukhang may graduation ata nabasa ko sa ano, newspaper.’ Sabi ko, ‘Ma, sabi kasi ng pari magulo,’” he recalled.
Duterte said it was only when he was mayor that his mother found out the truth that San Beda actually held graduation rites, when she bumped into a school official at an event.
