President Rodrigo Duterte is grateful for Russia’s offer to write a “wish list” of what he needed to fight illegal drugs and criminality as well as help improve the lives of Filipinos.

“I would like to thank Russia for understanding us. My problem—and they know also that how hard I am in dealing with the economic stress of my country. And for them it was a very nice human gesture. To the Russian Republic, salamat po,” said Duterte in his arrival Friday night from a four-day state visit from China.

Duterte was reacting to the offer of Russian Ambassador Igor Khovaevto after Duterte declared his wish of marching arm-in-arm with Russian President Valdimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping “against the world.”

“Formulate your wish list. What kind of assistance do you expect from Russia and we will be ready to sit down with you and discuss what can and should be done…in any area, any field of possible cooperation,” said Khovaevto who stressed that Russia was different form what it has been portayed in Hollywood films.

Khovaevto claimed that Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was impressed with Duterte during their brief meeting at the ASEAN summit in Laos last month.

In his arrival press conference, Duterte cited Medvedev and Russia to clarify his announcement to sever military and economic ties with the US.

“In the past and until I became President, we always follow what the United States would give the cue. What he would give the cue that we are there, we are there. We follow. Pasunod-sunod tayo. Hindi ako magsunod. Now, for example Russia came out with a statement that, there’s mention here that I had a talked with (Russia Prime Minister Dmitry) Medvedev and they are ready to extend any and all assistance. So that if I would like to have an atomic bomb and if it is given to us, I will bring it here. That is what it means,” Duterte said.

In the same briefing, Duterte declared anew his man crush for Russia’s tough talking leader, Vladimir Putin. “My favorite hero is Putin,” said Duterte.
